Description: A medium site on a small lake at the widening of the San Juan River. This popular campground has a tendency to flood in heavy rain but should be high and dry during the popular summer months. This is an open, RV friendly site with a beautiful sandy beach. . Things to Do:
Beach – Relax on the beach at the lake. Port Renfrew also has a great sandy beach about 2 km long across the end of the port with lots of driftwood, crashing waves and no structures built.
Big Tree Viewing – Visit Avatar Grove, The San Juan Spruce, The Red Creek Fir, or the Harris Creek Spruce. Directions
Boating – there is a primitive boat launchBotanical Beach – At the west end of Juan de Fuca Park is Botanical Beach, one of the richest tidal areas along the west coast. Botanical Beach also has a unique shoreline framed by ridges of shale and quartz, which jut up through the black basalt to form huge tableaus. Botanical Beach is the western terminus for the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail and a popular day trip destination for visitors wishing to observe this sensitive and unique ecosystem. Wildlife viewing is best done at low tide (less than 1.2 m), when visitors can walk out across the flat sandstone and granite outcroppings to view tide pools filled with brightly coloured marine life.
Fishing – There are Cutthroat and sea run Dolly Varden in the lake. Nearby Port Renfrew offers world-class salt water fishing for salmon, halibut, crab, ling cod, red snapper, and a variety of bottom fish. Port Renfrew’s fishing, in particular the nearby Swiftsure Bank, is considered by many to be BC’s best kept secret. Hiking – The is a short nature trail at the lake as well as numerous trails around Port Renfrew.
Surfing – San Juan Harbour is home to two surf breaks, both breaking at the rivermouths along the beaches to the north-west of town. When the big south-west swells arrive, these can deliver some excellent waves … but a good wetsuit is required, year-round!
Swimming – You can swim in the lake, or head into Port Renfrew and swim from the beach at the end of San Juan Inlet.
